Tiffins
From A Vegan Guide To Bristol 2006
Opposite Somerfields on St Michaels Hill, and just past well known drinking spot the Highbury Vaults (once the site of the public gallows in Bristol), and close to Treblerock guitar shop, not far from St Michaels café is one of Bristols best food spots, Tiffins. Predominantly a take-away (although there is some limited seating available), the menu is 80% vegetarian, with only a couple of meat dishes available on the menu.
I was brought up vegetarian explains Jay, who together with husband Nick runs Tiffins, and we found in Bristol that other vegan take-away dishes available never quite hit the spot. So we have developed our own, all unique and all made from traditional Gujurati recipes. This area of India, where I was brought up, is predominantly vegetarian, mainly for religious reasons, and its culinary history is rich in vegan dishes.
Consequently there are some superb vegan options available from a menu that changes daily, including curries, dhals and pulses. The Chickpeas in Tamarind is a particular highlight, as is the Potatoes with Peanut and Coconut (divine), and the food is fresh, clean and wholesome. The food is served cold so you can reheat at home when ready, although it can be heated for you on request. And it is always absolutely excellent, as well as being exceptionally good value.
Tiffins also provide a vegetarian/vegan outside catering service, and have recently catered for as diverse a range as christenings and weddings right through to teaching the Bristol Fire Service how to prepare a decent curry! With regualr customers from Thornbury, Clevedon and Nailsea and beyond, Tiffins also visit several shows and fests, including the Bristol Vegan Fayre. We like to support the local community, and we source most of our ingredients from local organic suppliers, including Earthbound, adds Jay, and most of our customers are vegetarian or vegan who come here specially because they know the food is truly animal free. Well be at the next Bristol Vegan Fayre at the World Cup Food Fest representing India, so if you havent had a chance to visit us before then, please do come down and try our culinary delights. We know you wont be disappointed.
Their food is in my humble opinion pure magic tastes fantastic, very nutritious, decent price, served cold so ideal for picking up when passing by at any time of the day and then sticking in the oven whilst Eastenders is on and devouring soon after. No shopping, no preparation, no washing up afters, just the pure pleasure of eating. Magic. And Tiffins are not the only magicians in the family son Amar is a close up magician with a stunning variety of tricks to entertain at private parties, corporate events, weddings, shows and of course our own Bristol Vegan Fayre on Saturday June 10th, when Amar will be on hand to leave you spellbound with his amazing repertoire. A very special family indeed, and a welcome addition to the ever expanding veggie/vegan scene in this fair city. Do visit.
